this morning on the shooting death of a former navy s.e.a.l. known as the deadliest sniper in u.s. history. 38-year-old chris kyle was killed yesterday along with a second man at a gun range near ft. worth, texas. these are pictures of kyle taken from the security company he founded after leaving the navy. the gunman accused of killing kyle has been identified as eddie ray routh. he is in custody facing two counts of capital murder. earlier i spoke with one of kyle's friends, jason kos, about the man he called a war hero. >> he and a friend took a marine that was suffering from ptsd to a gun range to shoot and as a way that he always did giving back and, you know, it was certainly him taking his time to help, again, help war heroes. >> he had quite a reputation in the field as one of the most lethal snipers out there. how did he handle that? >> you know, he viewed, chris viewed it as his job and he was protecting his brothers, frankly. he as a man was quite contrary to that because he was incredibly loving father and charismatic and really caring person. so, it's quite a contrast from what he

range in texas. one of them is a well-known former navy s.e.a.l. his name is chris kyle and wrote this memoir, "american sniper" after he left the navy s.e.a.l.s. it went on the be a best-seller and propelled him to stardom. susan candiotti is closely following this for us. susan, a little while ago we heard from law enforcement where the shooting happened. what did they say? >> you know we got a lot of details from them, don. and police believe it was actually the very first time that legendary navy s.e.a.l. sniper chris kyle and his friend chad littlefield met with another marine vet, 25-year-old eddie ray routh. and it ended tragically with kyle and littlefield shot dead multiple times of a remote area of a gun range near ft. worth, texas. police say they were found nearly two hours later by a guide at the range. about 25 to 30 other weapons were found at the crime scene, including ak-47s and long guns. investigators say routh drove off in kyle's pickup and headed to his sister's house. there he allegedly told her and his brother what happened. he left, and the two called polic

the navy yard and anacostia stations during the evening rush. some of them took matters into their own hands and walked out through the tunnel. fox 5's karen gray houston live outside the anacostia station with the latest. >> reporter: some of those passengers just panicked when they were forced to sit in hot dark trains for more than half an hour. they say a conductor went over the pa system and told them there was a fire on the tracks. well, it turns out there was only smoke, but still fire trucks raced to scene at anacostia and at the navy yard stations. metro says the smoke was due to an arcing insulator problem which can be relatively routine, but an emergency responder may have hit controls that accidentally zapped electricity to two green line trains that were stopped in the tunnel. one passenger eventually hit the emergency exit button and discovered it was only a short walk through the tunnel to get out at the anacostia station. so a lot of passengers just followed him out. metro stopped rail service between navy yard and southern avenue and provided shuttle bus service, but
a 25-year-old iraq war vet allegedly killed former navy s.e.a.l. sniper chris kyle and another man at a gun range in texas over weekend. eddie ray ralph was arrested on two counts of capital murder. joe, this morning where do things stand with this investigation? >> john, behind me is where eddie ray ralph is being held on $3 million bond. it's still early in the investigation. authorities still trying to figure out what happened at that shooting range and why. >> former navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle who claimed a record 150 kills in iraq died at the hands of another vet, authorities say, allegedly using a semiautomatic handgun. what police don't know yet is why. >> i don't know that we'll ever know. he's the only one that knows that. but at this point he hasn't made any comments to law enforcement as to why he did it. >> they all drove together in a pickup truck, authorities say. less than two hours later, kyle and littlefield were dead. ralph had fled to his sister's house. he told her what happened. she called police. and ralph was eventually caught. ralph is an iraq war veteran. he

police say is holding a 5-year-old little boy captive in an underground bunker. jimmy lee dikes is a navy veteran. neighbors say he has deep mistrust of the government. we'll go right now to the scene in midland city, alabama, gabe guttierez, a tough few days. another emotional day ahead, i suspect. >> reporter: that's right. this afternoon mourners are preparing to remember that slain bus driver. police appear willing to wait this one out. as police towed the school bus from the crime scene friday, investigators released the first picture of the man they say is responsible. 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes. the man believed to be holding hostage a boy with asberger's syndrome named ethan in an underground bunker. >> we understand he's got supplies there. he's got food there. but this is a young child five years old. has he got food that this child will eat? >> reporter: nbc news has confirmed dykes served in the u.s. navy in the 60s. he served various awards, a good conduct med methal and vietnam service medal. but on tuesday those honors seem very far away. police say dykes boarded a stopped
four tours in iraq. another veteran he was trying to help is now charged with killing retired navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle at a gun range in texas. casey stiegel, with more on that. a lot of talk about ptsd, post-tramatic stress disorder. did the gunman here have that? >> reporter: we simply don't know. it is important to point out that chris kyle had a reputation for helping troops who had come back home and suffered ptsd but we do not know if that is the case with this man. the only thing the pentagon told us about the alleged gunman he was a corporal in the marines and that he was active duty from 2006 to 2010. did tours of duty in iraq and haiti but was most recently listed as reserve. at a weekend news conference authorities here in texas says he was unemployed and navy suffered from a mental illness as a result of his time in the military but no real motive has been given. kyle, his friend, chad littlefield and roth drove to the gun range in kyle's truck on saturday where investigators say ralph shot and killed the two men, stole the truck and drove to his sister's home. told them

. >>> there are new details about the mental state of an iraq war veteran accused of killing a former navy s.e.a.l. who claimed to be the best sniper in the iraq war. he was reportedly taken to a mental hospital in september after he threatened to kill his family and himself. he was also treated at the same mental hospital last month. officials say he claimed he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. he's been charged with murder in the shooting death of chris kyle and his friend, chad littlefield. soldiers suffering from this disorder says the army needs to doer to -- to help them. the director says he's signed an order to treat them on the battlefield and at home. he made the announcement in washington state. psychiatrists have been accused of changing ptsd diagnosis so the army would not have to pay medical benefits. >> on the first step by which i ask for a report back before the end of february from the undersecretary of the vice cheap to present me with a plan by which we can make it a reality. >> he says he does not believe the reversal of ptsd diagnoses happened at other basis
